TUESDAY:

Warm Up: Working with your partner, complete Halloween activity.
Classwork: Finish reading Monday’s play if needed. Then read “Night Burial” (24-31) in READ magazine. (8.1.spi.6,7,11,12,18,24,25)

Warm Up: If you were granted three wished, what would they be?  Explain.  You  may NOT wish for additional wishes.
Classwork: Read “The Monkey’s Paw” (403-411) in the blue literature book.  Take related “Check Test” if time allows.

THURSDAY:

Warm Up:  Complete word puzzle on overhead.
Classwork: Complete ?’s 1-7 of “Analyzing the Story” adn #2 “A Critical Response” in CRS (412) in the blue literature book.  Turn in when finished.  Class discussion to follow.  Story quiz tomorrow.

FRIDAY:

Warm Up: Complete word puzzle on overhead.
Classwork: Take quiz over “The Monkey’s Paw.”   Review Vocabulary #4 terms and introduce related creative assignment.
Homework: None. However, you might want to begin working on the Voc. #4 creative assignment due next Wednesday.

Homework: Vocabulary #3 written assignment due Thursday.

TUESDAY:

Warm Up: Create a “Top 10 Terrors” list. Please # your list. Why do some people like being scared? Can a good scare ever be healthy?
Classwork: Working with a partner, answer “Reading Check” and ?’s 2-7 (209) in CRS. Turn in before the period’s end. Brief class discussion to follow. (8.1.spi.6,7,11,12,18,24,25)

Warm Up: Read all of (170). Then complete the activity under the heading, “Open House.”
Classwork: Introduce and read “The Landlady” (171-179) in literature book. Take “Check Test” over story. (8.1.spi.6,7,11,12,18,24,25)

Classwork: Working with a partner, answer “Reading Check” A-D and ?’s 2-6 (181) in CRS. Turn in before the period’s end. Brief class discussion to follow. (8.1.spi.6,7,11,12,18,24,25)

Warm Up: Read “Meet the Writer” (178-179) and take notes about Roald Dahl.
Classwork: Working with a partner, review “The Landlady” by completing a plot peak for the story. Then skim the story to find at least 5 examples of foreshadowing and at least 2 examples of situational irony. Class will orally review and discuss “The Landlady.”
Homework: Study for Wednesday’s quiz over “The Landlady.” The “Words to Own” will be included.

THURSDAY:

Warm Up: None
Classwork: Take story quiz over “The Landlady.” Review and complete rough draft of “I Am” poem.

WEEK OF OCTOBER 2 – OCTOBER 6

MONDAY:

Warm Up: Read (501), take notes, and complete “Quickwrite.”  1/2 page minimum
Classwork: Introduce and explain vocabulary units and weekly procedures. Guidelines and word lists for the first semester have been distributes. The vocabulary #2 written assignment is as follows:         (8.2.tpi.9,10)

Yarns and tall tales:  Stories told in common language about impossible happenings.  Select a theme from one of the following or create a tall tale topic of your own and stretch it into an outrageous and unbelievable yarn:

  • How an elephant’s trunk became the first fire truck.
  • How a dinosaur’s sneeze started breezes.
  • How a granfather’s clock became the first wristwatch.
  • How an anteater invented the first trumpet.
  • How a ticklebone was discovered.
  • How a spider became a spider monkey.
  • How a hole became the Grand Canyon.

Be imaginative and use specific details.  Your tall tale should be told from third-person point of view, written in a simple dialect, and contain exaggeration.  Your tale’s hero or protagonist should be “larger than life.”  DUE WEDNESDAY. FOLLOW THE GUIDELINES IN YOUR BINDER.

Read “They Have Yarns” (496-497), “Pecos Bill and the Mustang” (502-505), and “Paul Bunyan” (507-508).  Then complete the following written assignment in CRS: Answer ?’s 1-3 & “Creative Writing” #2 (499) and ?’s 1-6 (509).  Turn in by period’s end.  If time, begin working on vocabulary #2 written assignment.
Homework: Study for Tuesday’s quiz over humor and today’s tall tales.  Work on vocabulary #2 written assignment (due Wednesday).

TUESDAY:

Warm Up: Complete the story-related “Daily Oral Language” on overhead.      (8.3.spi.1,2,9)
Classwork: Take quiz over humor and Monday’s tall tales.  Complete hyperbole activity (handout).
Homework: Work on vocabulary #2 written assignment (due Wednesday).     (8.2.tpi.9,10)

WEDNESDAY:

Warm Up:  None
Classwork: Review vocabulary #2 in groups using written assignments. (8.2.tpi.9,10)       Begin watching Johnny Appleseed.
Homework: Study vocabulary #2 for Thursday’s quiz.

THURSDAY:

Classwork: Take vocabulary #2 quiz.    (8.1.spi10 & 8.1.tpi.1)     Finish watching Johnny Appleseed.
