NOTE: Novel tests will be taken on Monday, February 5th. Students must read a book found on Ms. Allen’s book list. This assignment was made on library day, January 3rd.
MONDAY:
Warm Up: Check last Friday’s “Gotitus” verb activity.
Classwork: Review similes and metaphors and introduce personifications. Complete both sides of personification handout on notebook paper.
Homework: Continue reading book report novel. Novel test will be taken on Monday, February 5th.
TUESDAY:
Warm Up: Introduce voc. #8 terms and explain memory cards: Create 12 cards, one for each vocabulary term, by writing/drawing each word so that it illustrates its meaning. Look at the examples on Ms. Allen’s chalkboard for a reminder of how to create your cards. Due Thursday.
Classwork: Discuss and collect yesterday’s personification handout. Illustrate an original personification. It may be one you wrote for yesterday’s assignment or one you newly create for this. Illustration must be full-page and full-color. Your sentence must be written neatly in dark marker. Due tomorrow. (quiz grade)

WEDNESDAY:
Warm Up: List 20 abstract nouns. Abstract are nouns that cannot be seen such as love and hate. No you may NOT use these two in your list of 20!! : )

MONDAY:
Warm Up: Finalize sign-up sheet for novel tests.
Classwork: Introduce vocabulary #7 terms and explain related written assignment. The vocabulary #7 written assignment is as follows:
Write a story about a person’s arrest and trial for a crime. Your story may be realistic or fancilful. You might be a court reporter writing for a newspaper or magazine. You might even be the alleged or “accused” criminal keeping a diary. Therefore, your story may be sritten iin either 1st or 3rd person. Be sure to answer the 5 W’s: who – what – when – where – why or how. Be imaginative and use specific details. Remember this should be a fill-in-the-blank story so leave numbered blanks where the 8 vocabulary words are supposed to be. Create an answer sheet on a separate sheet of paper. DUE THURSDAY. FOLLOW THE GUIDELINES IN YOUR BINDER.

Classwork: Introduce and read “Broken Chain” (29-36). Then take related “Check Test.” Complete “Reading Check” and “First Thoughts” (38). Do ALL sentences in #1.

Warm Up: Read #1 “Writer’s Notebook” (39). Follow the directions: brainstorm then choose one “first” about which to write. (1/2 page minimum)
Classwork: Read “Meet the Write” (36) and the poem “Oranges” (37). Then answer ?’s 2-8 (38) in CRS. You should write your answers on the written work you did in class Tuesday. Turn in when finished.

Classwork: Review and take notes on “6 Ways to Write an Introduction.” Then write two new introductions for your “free time” essay. Each introduction should use a different one of the six types of introductions discussed in class. Turn in by period’s end.

Warm Up: Review notes for the TCAP Writing Assessment on overhead.
Classwork: Write a 35-minute timed expository essay using the following prompt:
Writing Situation: There are twenty-four hours in a day and one hundred sixty-eight hours in a week. Many of those hours are used for sleeping, eating, going to school, studying, etc. Hopefully you have some free time during the week. What do you like to do in your free time?
Directions for Writing: Before you begin writing, think about activities that interest you. What do you enjoy doing? Now explain in an essay what you would choose to do in your free time and why. Support you ideas with examples and details.
Homework: None
TUESDAY:
Warm Up: Review book list and assign next novel test. TEST DATE: TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 5th
Classwork: Complete “Proofreader’s Challenge” handout. Then work with your designated partner to locate any errors you may have missed. Class correction to follow. (Due to group pictures for the yearbook, original lesson has been postponed until Wednesday so that all students will be in class.)
Homework: Check over “Proofreader’s Challenge” handout one more time. We’ll finish checking it on Wednesday.

Classwork: Begin unit “Letting Verbs Do the Work” in the On Target workbook Review active and passive verbs. Then complete exercises 1 – 2 (15-17) on notebook paper.

Warm Up: Review active voice verbs on the overhead and discuss yesterday’s exercises.
Classwork: Continue unit “Letting Verbs Do the Work” in the On Target workbook. Review linking and action verbs. Then, on notebook paper, complete exercises 4, 5, and 7 (18-20) by replacing weak linking verbs with strong action verbs.
Homework: Begin reading your book for the novel test to be taken on Monday, February 5th.

Warm Up: Review linking verbs on the overhead and discuss yesterday’s exercises.
